Last year the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a final rule expanding competitive bidding within the 2026 Home Health Prospective Payment System and Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics, and Supplies (DMEPOS) program to include ostomy and urological supplies. While competitive bidding is intended to lower costs for interchangeable medical devices, ostomy and urological supplies — which are legally and clinically defined as prosthetic devices — are fundamentally different from other medical supplies. Competitive bidding on these products risks harming patients and increasing long-term Medicare costs.
